Bonnie Shwery, MA, L.Ac

Bonnie graduated with a BA/MA Honors Degree in Oriental Studies from the University of Cambridge, England 1980/1984. After this, she continued four more years of advanced linguistic and cultural studies in Asia.

Returning to an earlier interest in natural medicine, Bonnie entered a premier Acupuncture college in the United Kingdom, the College of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, in 1984 and graduated in 1988. This college had a strong emphasis on the holistic mind-body-spirit approach to health and well-being. On graduating she practiced Acupuncture in London for four years and attended advanced seminars in Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, and western medical subjects.

Chinese Herbal Medicine studies began concurrently in London with Ted Kaptchuk (author of The Web That Has No Weaver) for 2 years, and concluded with a Diploma from the London College of Chinese Herbal Medicine in 1991 after a further 3 years of study.

In addition to the above Bonnie had the privilege of studying with many prominent practitioners in England, including Peter Deadman (author and editor of the Journal of Chinese Medicine), Julian Scott, and Giovanni Maciocia (author of foremost acupuncture textbooks as well as a definitive book on Gynecology) in a yearlong intensive course.

Bonnie Shwery holds licenses to practice Acupuncture by the North Carolina Acupuncture Licensing Board and by the Acupuncture Board in California. She is also certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturists.

Bonnie has previously served as a Board Member of the NC Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and acted as liaison between the NC Licensing Board and the NC Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. She co-owns the Acupuncture Center of Cary in Cary, NC with her husband Dr. Richard Shwery.

While living and working in Santa Cruz, CA 1991-1995, Bonnie came to study and utilize an innovative style of Japanese acupuncture as taught by Kiiko Matsumoto. While in CA she also had the opportunity to attend many functional medicine seminars and to study the latest cutting-edge research, which she continues today. It is this vast educational and clinical experience that distinguishes the Acupuncture Center of Cary.
